UN together with many other organizations throughout the world has agreed to recognize contribution of family farming by declaring the year 2014 to be the,
INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF FAMILY FARMING
(IYFF),
Family farmers can be defined as producers who make most of
their living by farming, have limited access to land and other
resources, and work with family members. Family farmers produce over
half of the world's food and they have the potential to produce more.
The United Nations declared 2014 as the International Year of Family
Farming. This is a very important recognition of the multiple social,
economic, environmental and cultural functions of family farming. Under
the right conditions and policies, family farmers have proven to be
innovative, productive and resilient by using agro-ecological practices
that are based on local resources and ecological processes. This makes
family farmers key players in tackling the pressing issues of our time,
such as hunger, climate change and biodiversity loss.
Running up to and during the IYFF, the AgriCultures Network will
therefore help raise the visibility of the contributions of
agro-ecological family farmers and advocate for policies to strengthen
them.
