President Jakaya Kikwete has ordered Rufiji Basin Development Authority
(Rubada) to immediately discuss and offer at least 32,000 ha of land to
two firms in the authority’s project. The two firms are said have been
waiting for the land for over five years.
The companies, Frontline Development Partners and Lukurilo Holdings Company Limited, have been requesting for 20,000 and 12,000 ha respectively but todate, Lukurilo has only secured a third of it, while Frontline Development Partners are yet to get any land.
“We have already discussed this issue at the State House in Dar es Salaam and we reached a decision but what has happened four years down the line? What are you still discussing?” queried the President in a statement circulated to the media yesterday.
He went on to order the Rubada leaders to meet and resolve the matter this very week.
“When everyone given a task wants to discuss the issue before taking the necessary steps, this delays our country’s development,” he cautioned.
The President, who is on an inspection of different development projects in the district also launched the Kibiti Water Project and handed over two speed boats meant to serve as ambulances.
According to him, for Tanzania to quickly move forward, the authorities should fasttrack implementation of what has been agreed. He warned that it will not be tolerated that the nation’s progress be delayed by irresponsible authorities.
In the statement, no defence or explanation was offered by Rubada Director General Aloyce Masanja, who simply responded to the President’s inquiry by stating the amount of land that has been offered--the said 4,000 ha--awarded to Lukurilo Holdings Company Limited.
Despite Rubada’s failure to offer the land to the investors, the President applauded the authority’s decision for coming up with an agriculture camp which he inaugurated.
While in the area, the President launched the camp in owned by by the authority and that is aimed at equipping youths with best agricultural practices.
“We are preparing the youth to be good farmers who can employ themselves. This camp is not to prepare job seekers but farmers who will employ themselves,” President Kikwete said.
“If we involve the youth in agriculture we are surely going to bring about agricultural revolution in our country,” the President said.
